An Unexpected Start
To say the first six months of my marriage were far from what I imagined would be an egregious understatement. The wedding was perfect. I walked down the aisle, stood face-to-face with the man who would in just moments become my husband. We said our vows, were declared man and wife, and then he lifted me in his arms and carried me down the aisle. I didn't know then that it would be the last time he carried me in his arms as a purely romantic gesture and not out of practical necessity. I also didn't know that when I changed out of my wedding dress into the evening gown I had picked out for the reception that it would be the last time I would lift my arms over my head and use my fingers to pull a dress down over my own body, the last time I would bend down and use my hands to slide shoes on my feet planted firmly on the ground. Prologue

Arianna awoke, still groggy from the sedatives she had been given during her surgery. As a C1 quadriplegic, she couldn't control her diaphragm, so she couldn't breathe on her own. Her doctors had decided to give her a tracheostomy, to assist her in breathing. She now had a hole in her neck where a tube was inserted. The tube was connected to a ventilator, which inhaled and exhaled in a rhythm for her, meaning she could get oxygen without breathing for herself. The thought of it made her uncomfortable. She didn't like the way it looked, how the plastic tube snaked out of a hole in the center of her rigid neck brace, connecting to some machine out of her field of view. She hated the idea of something breathing for her, and she hated that she couldn't even breathe on her own. Her thoughts were interrupted when her nurse, Carrie, walked in. "Good morning, Arianna," she said. "I'm here to talk to you about your bladder and bowel routine today." Arianna couldn't speak. She couldn't
